Thesis: Process – 4

I believe I have determined what I will do for my thesis however now I have the problem of what does that mean? I have worked out that I want to do a personal project and something that I don’t feel I will have the time for outside of school (as it is probably very ambitious) so I will make a game about my grandparents and their experiences. This hits close to home and I will probably break a few times while making it but it will be worth my while.

The problem is: it’s just a game. What research and inspirations will I use to make it more meaningful? How do I explain that these things won’t just “help my project” but rather push my project and give the research context? I suppose what I’m worried about is how I make my research focus, focused. In my mind, it is focused, but perhaps that is only because it is a project that is close to my heart. Maybe since it is personal, the research I should count on will need to speak more to my personal experiences than anything else. I still need to use research that speaks to the experience of the player and the mood I want to show however.

Listing the key points in the project might help me organize my thoughts and speak to what research I need to obtain a better insight into how to make this project the best. But is that even the point? Should I make the project the best it can be or should I do the project for the sake of personal development?

Thesis: Process – 3

Should I do something that follows my career path or that would be an interesting personal project? Should I do something creative or practical? I have several ideas for my thesis but I’m no closer to determining what I will eventually do for it. I find I don’t have the time to even think about it lately, let alone sit down and start researching and planning what I should do. I understand that the process can and, most likely, will change but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a starting point. Being let loose without any constraints makes the process seem a little hopeless because I’m used to creating things within a framework, not left to my own devices.

Maybe it is better to just choose one idea and see how it develops. However, if I do this and it doesn’t go well, do I drop the idea or do I keep with it? The three ideas I have I want to create but should I do them as personal projects or as a thesis project? I think what I should do is combine the problems and go forward with that idea. I think if I did something that was personal but will help me with my career goals it will be the best.

Thesis: Process – 2

Listening to the other students’ Pecha Kuchas made me realize that we all have a similar goal in mind on some level. We all want to find our practice, what makes us who we are and what motivates us. I think we are all using this as a means to express ourselves and find what we want out of the rest of our careers and our lives. A lot of the other students also seem interested in making a practice or product that they can continue forward with after school – which I think is a great idea.

In art we often forget what motivates and inspires us because we are constantly being creative and looking at that same inspiration for new ideas. In that sense, we don’t often reflect on why we like things, we just do things and make it a part of us. However, through the act of reflection we can get more in tune with what makes us who we are and that can help us build upon our practice and give us new motivation to learn new skills.

While I still don’t know what I will do for my thesis, I feel secure in the knowledge that it will be a reflection of the principles within myself and that it will be a good reflection of my abilities. Whether I leave with something finished or as just a demo, I know it will be worth my time and effort.

Thesis: Process – 1

Going into my third year, I did not want to think about my thesis for my final year. However, it’s best to plan ahead and figure out the good ideas from the bad ideas early. Iteration over time seems to work best for me so I’ll go with that approach. The only drawback is that sometimes focusing on one thing for too long I get exhausted and mentally drained from it – hopefully that won’t happen.

As an exercise we were to do Pecha Kucha presentations about ourselves: our interests, strengths, inspirations, career goals, etc. While making mine, it made me reflect heavily on what I want out of my life and who I am. I want my thesis to be something that will help me in the future in some form, whether it is something I can go forward with after school or something that shows off my abilities in the best light. I focused my presentation on what inspires me and on the things I like to do, then contextualizing that to my thesis proposals. Hopefully through presenting a few ideas for my thesis, I’ll be able to get close to the final concept.

I think working through the thesis slowly and building upon it step by step will end in the best possible project. It can’t hurt to plan through a project and take feedback critically and adapt.

Second Chance – LARP

Second Chance is a Live-Action Role-Playing Game (LARP) that was created to be a follow up to another LARP called The Prison. In class, we played a game of The Prison and during it those who got eliminated had nothing to do after the fact. Therefore we were tasked with a making a LARP that worked opposite a game of elimination and could deal with a steady increase in players.

Second Chance is a game where you are asked to take a pill that may or may not take your prior memory, leaving you only with your personality. You are then placed in a room with others and must gain trust to become a model citizen within the society. Those who were opportunists in the original game will have trouble finding favour in Second Chance and will create new dynamics between characters.

Blind Games Bundle

In Second Year, I worked in a group with Siyun (Sisley) Hu, Yanzi (Cindy) Xin, and Yuan Ting (Stephy) Chang for our Inclusive Design class. We went through a series of iterations before our final iteration (Work Together).

At first we tried to make a game which people who were blind could play – so a sound based game. We went through a few iterations and versions of games to play but the main problem was that it was hard for us to tell if the game worked or not.

At this point we asked Steve Engels, a professor at the University of Toronto, who is also a game designer and has worked on Accessible Games before for help. He got us in contact with Daniel Zingaro, a colleague of Steve’s who is blind himself. They helped us tremendously throughout the process.

Our professor, Jorge Silva, gave us critical insight and said our design was not helping anyone. It was safe and would do what we designed it to but how was it changing anything? This got us thinking that what we were doing was trying to solve a problem as opposed to looking at the problem itself and offering a new way to look at it.

Our final iteration was Work Together which let a sighted and non-sighted person play simultaneously together to beat a level within a time limit. You can check out user reviews and suggestions of Work Together here.

The exercise of designing for the differently abled was in all honestly extremely stressful but very rewarding. I don’t think I would do it again any time soon by myself but I would like working on something like this with a group who has greater insight than me. Working on something like this helps you to expand your view of the world and try to think more out of the box when you are designing something.

Marry Me! Engagement Ring Dispenser

The Marry Me! Engagement Ring Dispenser is an object from a future where polygamy is accepted and everyone has as many wives/husbands as they desire.

This was created for school using cards from The Thing From the Future as a set of prompts. This was an exercise in bringing something that could exist in the future into the present and seeing how people would react to it.

My product is for the polygamist on the go who sees the next love of their life. See that new love? Don’t despair! With Marry Me! Engagement Ring Dispenser you’ll never be at a loss for a ring to give to that special someone.

After creating it we had to get strangers to react to it, so I hit the street and got people to act in a faux commercial for me. That commercial will never see the light of day again if I can help it (as it was a wholly embarrassing experience). The strangers I got to participate seemed willing to help but the question of whether it would be widely accepted I think was avoided for reasons of it being abnormal.
